I was playing around the NaBloPoMo randomizer again, and came across a post on deliciousjuice.com. She says that her neighbors already have a Christmas wreath on their door. That reminded me of a press release I saw at work — a local radio station is already playing Christmas-themed music 24/7. They started this a few days ago — so it wasn’t even a full week into November when this began. Seriously, people. Soon stations will be starting this in October, and then it will just creep earlier and earlier…
Clicking the randomizer link a few more times, I see a post that reminds me of a story that was in the news today: a Chinese-made bead toy that’s being recalled in Australia and the U.S.. Why is it being recalled, you ask? No, it’s not lead paint, but you’re on the right track. A chemical in the beads converts to GHB (gamma hydroxy butyrate) — also known as the date rape drug. Obviously not something kids should be ingesting!

day two — so far, so good.
Posted by eric on November 2, 2007
My installation of MT4 was relatively painless last night. I think I’m one of the last people I know using it. Many people have switched to another blogging CMS, or they’ve moved to a hosting service. When I get around to it, maybe I’ll look at some alternatives.
Among other things I plan to do around here, once I get around to them:
- Update my Live Music page. It’s two years out of date.
- Update my Taping page. I now have a complete rig, and a few more tapes.
- Update the West Wing page, since the series is now over.
- Redesign the site. I have a mockup sitting on my server, but I never really fleshed it out. And I don’t think I like that look anymore.
As I said, they’re things for when I get around to them. We’ll see how well that works.
Tomorrow, UM Homecoming. Once again, I’ll be watching from here and not the Orange Bowl, since I can’t take off time during sweeps.

new coverart!
Posted by eric on April 8, 2007
A while back, I started making cover art for the December 5, 1997 DMB show at the Orange Bowl. Since it was at the Orange Bowl, I was looking forward to making the cover art and including some stadium photos. But Paint Shop Pro kept giving me memory errors. Today, I went back and essentially started from scratch, and it worked. It’s now up on the cover art page.

new content!

Last summer, I taped a few concerts (DMB and otherwise). Now I’ve written about it. And if you care to be generous, help me out via that Paypal button…

classics…
Posted by eric on November 23, 2006
Last night, I was listening to a tape of DMB’s show from 11-17-94. I don’t remember where it was. Maybe Colorado. Either that, or Virginia. Either way, the combination of a great setlist and great sound quality (soundboard!!) made for a great tape. I think there was a Seek Up opener — good stuff. I grabbed it off dreamingtree.org — I don’t remember if it was one of the new-old shows, or if it was just a random upload. Regardless, it’s a great tape, and worth a download 🙂

don’t try this at home…

YouTube – Rubens Tube physics experiment
Found this over on the Tapers Section boards. It’s a “hot” way to visualize music.

DMB recently released a “greatest hits” compilation, The Best of What’s Around. An assortment of studio and live tracks. You could buy it through the Warehouse pre-order store, which would get you the “encore” CD, with even more live tracks. I managed to miss the pre-order deadline, partially because I kept putting it off.
Sunday, I saw that Best Buy would have the CD (minus the encore CD, of course) for 11.99. I decided I’d buy it there, and just deal with the fact that I missed the extra tracks. So I did. And it sounds pretty good.
Today I see an email from DMB saying that they are making the encore CD available for a limited time at a premium price… $10 in addition to the price of the CD, if you order through them. One, I already have the CD at this point. Two, paying $10 for something that was free last week doesn’t make much sense. Oh well.
(side note: one-third of the way there.)

ticket stubs found
Posted by eric on December 20, 2005
I was cleaning my room last night, when I found some ticket stubs. Several of them. All of the stubs, in fact, from my first 5 DMB concerts. I knew I had them somewhere, I just didn’t know where. But now I do. I’ve scanned them and added them to the Live Music page.

more live music stuff…
Posted by eric on November 18, 2005
I’ve updated the Live Music page once again. I need to find a better way to set that page up, because with all of the ticket stubs, it’s getting really long. Maybe something sneaky with DIVs to show or hide the stubs. Or not.
The site redesign is still in progress. I think I have a design I like. I just need to flesh it out some more. Then convert everything. Ugh.

what’s “yours” isn’t necessarily really “yours”

Declaration of InDRMpendence (ZDNet)
Every day, I get the ZDNet Tech Update Today email. Usually I just glance over it. But today’s had an interesting article about Motorola’s ROKR and how it’s actually not doing all that well. At the bottom, was a link to this “declaration,” a previous article by the same author. I was already familiar with the situation he mentioned at the top, about the difficulty of playing digitally-purchased music on a home stereo, having read that article a few months ago. As much as everyone sings the praises of iTunes et al, it’s not necessarily all it’s cracked up to be.
